Major employers such as large shipyards or
transportation companies also offer programs to their
employees who qualify for leadership or technical
training. That doesn’t mean a small shipyard is going
to send someone to the Westlawn School of Yacht
Design to earn a degree on the shipyard’s time. But
you might be pleasantly surprised by apprenticeship
and mentor programs some employers run. Just as
we’d be happy if you found your job for free on this site
rather than pay someone to find you the exact same
job, we’d be happy to see you enrich your professional
strengths through free employer-based programs.

There are also several companies specializing in U.S.
Coast Guard licensing resources. These schools
provide software and study materials for unlimited
ocean masters, first mate, second mate, third mate,
and unlimited horsepower chief, first assistant
engineer, second assistant engineer and third
assistant engineer as well as materials for 100 ton,
200 ton, 500 ton and 1600 ton licenses. For someone
who is solely interested in resources for passing the
license exam, these companies offer sample
questions for deck and engine officers.

A nice feature of larger employers is that many offer
tuition reimbursement. Large companies with long
term goals and vision encourage their employees to
pursue an education at night or on weekends. Given
the high cost of attending a community college or four
year college, tuition reimbursement is a nice perk to
look for in considering employers. There are also
options out there for people with family and kids who
can’t find the time to physically attend classes. There
are on-line degree programs. But be careful… the
number of on-line degree programs has exploded in
past years.
