Education  and  Training  for  Maritime  Jobs  -  Resources for Deciding About Education

Maritime education is really a multi-million dollar industry in itself. There’s a wide
range of programs out there. You can learn anything from celestial navigation to
advanced diesel mechanics to container cargo management systems. There are
two year colleges offering associate degrees, four year colleges offering bachelor
degrees, maritime academies, union schools, private training centers, on-line study
programs, masters’ degree programs by maritime academies and other colleges
and universities that have expanded their curriculums to include graduate degree
programs in transportation, logistics and more. It can all make anyone dizzy.

Just as maritime jobs can differ vastly from one to the other, the training to qualify for
those maritime jobs presents a vast sea of options. Where you choose to educate
and train yourself will depend on what you’re looking to do, how much money you’re
willing to spend, and how much time you’re willing to invest.

When we think about college,
university and professional
education, we may envision
ivy-covered buildings in New
England towns, with gothic
architecture and campus
fraternities and sororities.
However, the institution of
education has changed
dramatically from traditional
models. Today's student may
attend school at night, on
weekends, or other flexible
terms.
For on-line and distance-learning students, their laptop computers have become
professors and lecturers.
