Texas A & M University at Galveston offers students the chance to operate and
maintain an ocean-going ship. The college curriculum includes classroom and
field training, which includes studies aboard the Training Ship Texas Clipper for
three summer cruises during which students acquire the training and education
to stand watches aboard commercial vessels. The college offers courses
covering seamanship, navigation, and engineering. When students complete
their education, they are eligible to sit for Coast Guard deck and engine exams to
enable them to serve as officers in the merchant marine.

Through the corps of cadets, the college is operated to foster leadership and
management skills for its graduates. This means formations, standing watches
and shipboard routine. This comes with the territory in the other maritime
academies as well.

The major division of the college is between deck and engine students. Under
the maritime license option program, students preparing for the third mate’s
license can major in:

Marine Biology
Marine Sciences
Marine Transportation

Students preparing for the third assistant engineer’s license can major in Marine
Engineering Technology. The university policy for the corps of cadets is that all
marine transportation majors must participate in the corps of cadets. For the
other majors, it is optional
