Great Lakes Maritime Academy
Part of Northwestern Michigan College, the Great Lakes Maritime Academy confers
graduates with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and an associate
degree in maritime technology. The college's graduates also qualify to take the U.S.
Coast Guard exam for the following licenses:
Third Mate - Great Lakes or Oceans - Unlimited Tonnage
First Class Pilot - Great Lakes
Third Assistant Engineer, Unlimited Horsepower, Steam and Motor
Cadets may opt to dorm with other students. The college does not impose a strict
military schedule. This academic program is the United States Maritime
Administration, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Michigan Department of Education.
The Great Lakes Maritime Academy obtained a 225-foot former Navy submarine
surveillance ship Persistent. The vessel is a Stalwart-class T-AGOS vessel (the class
vessel Stalwart is owned by SUNY Maritime College). The vessel’s new name is State
of Michigan.
The Great Lakes Maritime Academy operates under:

The beauty of the Great Lakes in the winter is captured in the photo above, showing
the school training ship docked at Traverse City, Michigan. Great Lakes is the only
academy situated on a body of fresh water, Lake Michigan.
The school is part of Northwestern Michigan College, a two year community college.
It is also a partner of Ferris State University. The school educates and trains students
for positions of leadership on Great Lakes, ocean-going ships and shore side
positions in the business world, with students gaining "hands-on" experience.
Graduates emerge with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and an
associate degree in maritime technology. Students, or cadets, who complete the
college program successfully qualify to take U.S. Coast Guard license exams.
That good looking dark-hulled ship huddled away like an ice goddess in the photo
above started her career off as the Stalwart Class Modified Tactical Auxiliary General
Ocean Surveillance Ship USNS Persistent, shown above in her original livery.
In that capacity, she started her career off in a vastly different path than as a school
ship. She was deployed to collected acoustical data on submarines during the Cold
War.
Perhaps one of the reasons these small ships are liked by
the maritime academies is that they are cheaper to
maintain than a 20,000 ton training ship. With a length of
224 feet and a displacement slighter over 1,500 tons, they
are easier on a school budget. Their availability with the
easing of the Cold War also contributed to their popularity,
as well as their multi-diesel power plant, which is an ideal
platform for providing "hands-on" training to students.
