"Hands On" training is provided at the California Maritime Academy, as it is at the
other maritime schools. That attribute in the education of a future maritime industry
professional goes far to make the graduates sought after in industry,.
It's one thing to sit at a CAD terminal and design the lay-out for an engine room. It is
yet another to stand watches in the bowels of a ship's machinery spaces to get a feel
of what it takes to operate a ship.
After such an experience, a marine engineer has a different perspective about the
best way to install machinery. He or she recognizes that certain pumps or motors
can't be mounted in certain locations because there might be no means of
accessing them... or that a heat exchanger can't be installed in a certain spot,
because there would be no way to pull out the tube bundle if the need arose.
