Marshall Community and Technical College - Inland Waterways Academy
The Inland Waterways Academy is one of the specialized programs at Marshall
Community and Technical College, a public college. It is linked to Marshall
University. The college provides developmental education, career/technical
education, university transfer education and general education. One of its most
unique attributes is the Inland Waterways Academy.
The college has been working with the towboat industry since 1999. The
curriculum originated with a deckhand course which prepared graduates to work
as deckhands on inland waterways vessels. Since then, the school has
partnered with the Tri State Fire Academy in Huntington to run deckhand training
at their Huntington, West Virginia facilities.
The Inland Waterways Academy offers a Towboat Cooking School, a 1-Day Fire
Safety Course for deckhands and cooks, a Confined Space Entry Seminar, a
Safety Management Course and courses in management and leadership
through the ACT program, and a distance learning program.
Captain John Whiteley is the director of the program. He is a graduate of the U.S.
Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. Captain Whitely has U.S. Coast Guard
and commercial experience.
