Fishing Vessel Job Descriptions
Like other vessels, the captain is in command of a fishing vessel. He or she is
responsible for the safe operation and navigation of the vessel. However, since
fishing boats range in size from very large trawlers to small lobster boats, there may
be a different level of formality. On a small boat, the captain, as the owner, may work
alongside deckhands when conditions require. The captain is responsible for
directing the vessel to worthwhile fishing locations based upon experience, fish
finding equipment sonar, weather and tidal conditions.
Today’s captain must be familiar with a wide array of technology, from navigational
and fish-locating electronics to on-line resources for marketing the catch. The mate
needs to know as much as the captain. The mate may have come into the job by
starting as a deckhand and catching the attention of the captain for being a fast
learner, good team player, and serious leader. The foot soldiers of this operation are
the deckhands. Deckhands carry out the physical duties of operating the boat’s
fishing gear…whether it’s long lines, nets, or crab pots.
Processors are workers on the receiving end of the catch who cut, clean and
package the caught fish. Processors may work on shore or on a processing vessel.
Shore-side processors may not have to face the ordeals of trying to keep their
balance on a violently pitching vessel, but their work brings its own challenges,
keeping up a demanding pace in carrying, butchering and cleaning fish and crab.
Even with mechanical processing equipment, the work is physically demanding.
