Working and living conditions on tugboats can be as varied as the boats themselves.
To learn more about
working on tugboats, see tugboatjobs.net. A tugboat company
can be a local operation in Upstate New York…or can be a Fortune 500 company
operating large ATB (articulated tug barge units) on the U.S. Eastern Seaboard.
Crowley Maritime’s Invader Class is part of a powerful stable of ocean-going tugs. Built by J.R.
McDermott & Company in Morgan City, Louisiana, the vessels are 136’ 2” long, 36’ 6” wide, with a
depth of 19’ 2”. They weigh in at 199 gross tons and have a fuel capacity of 155,000 gallons,
potable water capacity of 15,000 gallons, and carry 3,300 gallons of lube oil. They are powered
by twin EMD (Electromotive Diesel) 645-E-5s and transmit their 7,200 horsepower to 5 bladed
propellers through Falk 4.345:1 ratio reduction gears. The photo above is the

Conditions will reflect the philosophy of the company, budget of the company, its
priorities for safety, and career development. But this is the case with any industrial
company. See
seagoing career opportunities with Crowley Maritime , at their website. If
you work for a good company, you can earn good money. Some of the positions, such
as able-bodied seamen, deckhands and tankermen, will be physically demanding.
If you work on a tugboat, pushboat, towboat or other workboat engaged in long hauls
of two weeks or more, you’ll be assigned to a cabin you’ll share with one to three
roommates. Unless you’re the captain (or mate on a large tug) you’re not going to get
a private stateroom. Therefore, working on a tugboat or towboat will require the ability
to work as a team player and deal with adversities unique to the maritime industry. A
roommate may snore…or accidentally turn on a light when you’re trying to sleep during
an off-watch period. Crew members need to be sensitive to the sleep needs of off-
watch shipmates. Stray light and noise in the passageways can be stressful to
someone trying to get five or six hours of sleep to be rested and alert for an upcoming
watch. You’ll be expected to clean the shower after you use it…or wash your coffee
mug when you’re done. Living together at sea requires a certain level of
thoughtfulness among shipmates, both in conduct and housekeeping habits. Good
officers and crews recognize the importance of being considerate towards their
colleagues in the confined setting of a vessel at sea.

Although there are many factors to consider in accepting a job offer such as salary,
quality of workplace, geographically permissible, logistically permissible (as in the
scheduling of work days vs. off days) for family life, another important factor that
shouldn't be overlooked for more junior applicants is the opportunity for training and
advancement. If an employer is large enough to offer accredited training programs and
career paths such as deckhand to mate, QMED to engineer, etc., that's worth
considering.
