More naval architect, engineering & technical jobs
In fire fighting jobs, we saw two ships that destroyed by fire, Lafayette & Morro Castle.
The latter was lost to fire outright, but the first ship's loss was really a loss of righting
moment (above) and free surface effect, concepts addressed by naval architects.
Additionally, there is a naval architecture position with Naval Sea Systems ommand,
if you follow the preceding link to the government jobs section.
The unfortunate fate of the Lafayette,
formerly the Normandie, was an
engineering failure. As thousands of
tons of seawater were poured in (that's
about 65 pounds per cubic foot), it
created a moment arm that could not be
overcome by the ship's inherent righting
moment (see graph above from the U.S.
Navy Manual on Damage Control). On
the graph, you see that after a vessel
rolls to a certain angle (horizontal axis),
the righting moment necessary to
restore stability (vertical axis) is too large.
