Here's something you
don't see that often... a
LASH Vessel. The
acronym stands for
"lighter aboard ship". Like
containerization, the idea
was to reduce port time
to cargo loading
operations. Although we
saw the idea start to
evolve in the seventies,
the concept could not and

Hospitals, electric

How did a maritime
collision in New England
waters result in a wreck
that would come to be
known as the "Mount
Everest" of dive sites?
On July 25, 1956, the
ocean liner Andrea Doria
collided with the
Stockholm, a passenger
cargo vessel in fog off
Nantucket. The Andrea
Doria sank as a result of
the damage. Although
more than half a century
has passed since the
disaster, the wreck of the
liner has claimed the lives
of over a dozen divers. It is
enticingly close to the
surface, yet poses many
risks for even the most
experienced divers. Read
more about the ill-fated
liner at commercial diving

employers in this difficult
industry are featured.

Maersk (AP Moller) is giant in the container industry. They operate over 500 ships and
haul over a million and a half containers. They operate the world's largest container ship,
Emma Maersk. Maersk has been in the news for the heroic actions of Captain Richard
Phillips off the coast of Somalia when the Maersk Alabama came under attack by pirates.
Maersk offers job postings worldwide. It's website, to which we link from Ocean
Carriers,(look for the small box with blue text beneath the video of the container ship
slamming her way through a gale).
Maersk lists positions in technical capacities, management, operations, finance and more
throughout Rotterdam, Vietnam, Singapore and other places. Pictured above is the Maersk
Flensburg. By the way, the vessel in the video on the Ocean Carriers page (link above)
also happens to be a Maersk vessel. She's the Maersk Missouri and she is punching her
way through seas that would easily do in a lesser ship.
Trivia - Where did Captain Phillips go to school? Click here for the answer.
Many people believe that piracy was something that started with the April 2009 attack
on the Maersk Alabama. Professional mariners are well aware of earlier incidents
involving the Faina or Sirius Star (above). Overall, security is a growing industry and
we feature links to a few government maritime security jobs on the gov't jobs page.
Who's Hiring Now
Although the economy is dismal and our strongest sentiments seem to be those of
uncertainty these days, let's not lose hope. It's been good to have your company during
these times (and we apologize if we haven't been able to personally respond to you due
to the volume of mail). Good luck. Additional Who's Hiring Now Resources.
It’s not just off Somalia. Ships and large yachts (jobs on megayachts) have been
attacked by pirates in the Straights of Malacca, South China Sea, and Caribbean.
Oddly, the Maersk Alabama was again the victim of a pirate attack on November 18,
2009. The attack was deterred by the shipboard security contingent armed with
automatic weapons. Read the New York Times coverage of the incident.
Some of the Maersk Alabama's crew have alleged negligence in the handling of
pirate activity warnings. Although piracy isn’t a concern for brown water mariners
working solvent barges on the Mississippi (which, by the way are featured on the site
tugboatjobs.net, accessible from our tugboat jobs page), it remains a concern for
long distance ocean voyagers. A controversial aspect of maritime security measures
aimed at deterring piracy is the arming of civilian merchant mariners. Learn more
about Maersk Lines, featured below and in the Ocean Carriers section.

Animation depicting how the frozen compressed air supply
caused the the terrible loss. lic.2.5 attribution.anynobody
On April 10, 1963, the nuclear
submarine USS Thresher was lost
with all hands during tests off New
England. As tragic as the event
was, it was perhaps equally sad
that an air drier in the outlet side of
the compressor could have
prevented the disaster. During the
order to blow ballast from the tanks,
compressed air did what it always
tends to do in classic
thermodynamic fashion... it gets
colder as it passes through and
orifice and expands. In doing so, it
froze in the strainers admitting
compressed air to the ballast tanks.
On subsequent submarines, this led to the installation of air driers on the discharge sides of air
compressors. If there is any consolation to come from this tragic catastrophe, it might be that
the lessons learned could serve to prevent such an event from happening again to other
members of silent services of the world. Engineers, scientists, technicians, maintenance, field
service people who are interested the operation and maintenance of compressors, air driers
and auxiliary equipment could consider looking into job opportunities at Ingersoll Rand, one of
the giants in the compressed air and industry.
Do you recognize what this is? It's a Babcock & Wilcox sinuous header water tube
boiler used on Victory Ships. Unlike the gentle saturated steam boilers used on
Liberty Ships (which employed triple expansion steam engines), this hot water
kettle generated superheated steam (see the superheater sections in the drawing).

Superheated steam means that the steam is reheated after it comes off the first
pass of the boiler tubes. Unlike Liberty Ships, Victory Ships used steam turbines.
Saturated steam is "wet" in that it contains droplets of moisture (which is good for
reciprocating steam engines because it lubricates the piston and cylinder
surfaces, but disastrous for high pressure steam turbines spinning at 3,000 rpm).
For turbines, your steam needs to be "dry", which is achieved through the
superheating process. The two types of steam were also different in the danger
they posed to a wiper or oiler making engine room rounds. A low pressure
saturated steam leak from a pipe could badly scald a wiper with its heat and
pressure. On the other hand, a blast of superheated steam at high pressure could
cut a man in two. Anyone who worked on a turbine ship treated superheated steam
with great respect. (Drawing U.S. Maritime Service Training Manual)

Maritime security and related homeland security issues have become
an important part of admiralty law. Some of the shipboard security
positions require specialized law enforcement of legal background.
The Department of Customs & Border Protection is seeking a
candidate for Supervisory Attorney Advisor. This federal agency
operates under the Department of Homeland Security. This attorney
position will involve working with legal issues involving salvage,
intellectual property, vessel arrival, documentation, coastwise
restrictions among other areas of law.
To learn more about this Supervisory Attorney Advisor position,
go to the Maritime Law Page.

What is a Yacht Broker? Obviously it's someone who
sells yachts. Then what is a yacht? Aha... now that's a
tougher question. A yacht is Pearson 36 sailboat from 1973
or a yacht is a 125' Trumpy Motoryacht. A yacht can be a
250' megayacht that rivals the dimensions of a smal cruise
ship. Click Yacht Broker Job, on the Megayacht Jobs
section to see a few openings in yacht brokerage with
Frasier Yachts.
