Name That Vessel

In the Battle of the Atlantic during World War II, thousands of young sailors were
killed in the service of the U.S. Navy, the German Navy, and the Royal Navy. Although
these deaths were all tragic, there was an encounter between two vessels off the
coast of Rhode Island which was particularly regrettable. This was because it
occurred the day after German Naval Command issued orders to cease hostilities.
All the more unfortunate about the situation was the fact that the war was over two
days later.

The U-853 was declared a war grave after the war and has become a popular New
England dive site.

On May 5, 1945, the German submarine
U-853 sank the steamer
Black Point off
the coast of Block Island. Eleven crew
members of the
Black Point were killed by
the attack. The U-Boat was subsequently
sunk by an aggressive naval and air
response that converged on it from all
directions. The surface vessels included
the destroyer
Ericsson, destroyer escorts
Atherton and Amick and the Coast Guard
frigate
Moberly.
The U-853 was a Type IX C/40 U-Boat with
the nickname “Tightrope Walker”. The
Black
Point
was a cargo ship. Since the U-853
went down with all hands, no one will know
for sure what happened. But it is speculated
that the U-853’s young commanding officer,
Oberleutnant Helmut Fromsdorf had not
received the cease hostilities order. To think
that deaths aboard both the submarine and
the merchantman could have been avoided.
