Titan Salvage, the salvage and wreck-removal subsidiary of Crowley Maritime
Corporation, successfully refloated M/V Maersk Diadema at Lazaro Cardenas,
Mexico. The 975 foot containership ran aground outside the entrance channel to the
harbor on September 2. When the Maersk Diadema’s crew was unable to refloat the
containership, the German owners contacted Titan to free the one year-old ship from
a sandbank. The initial response consisted of a Titan salvage master and naval
architect to perform a preliminary survey of the vessel while a dive survey was also
performed. The Maersk Diadema was successfully refloated using her own ballast
system and the expertise of Titan’s personnel. In March 2006, Titan had successfully
refloated the 835-foot containership APL Panama from a beach in Ensenada,
Mexico. Titan Salvage operates worldwide and is based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The Maritime Administration will remove its 100th obsolete ship from storage in the
Beaumont Reserve Fleet in Texas since the congressional appropriations for the
program in 2001. The vessel Dutton was originally constructed in 1945 as the
Tuskegee Victory, one of 534 Victory ships built by the Maritime Commission during
World War II. Victory ships were used to transport cargo along with Liberty ships.
Following the war, they were operated for a brief period, then laid up for several
years. In 1958, Dutton was converted from a supply vessel to an oceanographic
survey vessel to support America's Polaris submarines. Dutton was finally
decommissioned in 1988. MARAD awarded the disposal contract to All Star Metals,
Inc. The former Victory ship will be dismantled in Brownsville, Texas. The cost of the
disposal is $1,078,000. The Maritime Administration stores ships at three National
Defense Reserve Fleet locations. These are the James River Reserve Fleet in
Newport News, Va., the Beaumont Reserve Fleet in Beaumont, Texas, and the
Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet in Benicia, California.

United States Attorney Nelson P. Cohen announced that IMC Shipping Co. Pte. Ltd.
(IMC), the owners of the cargo ship Selendang Ayu, pled guilty to a three-count
information charging two violations of the Refuse Act for illegal discharge of oil and
soy beans, and a violation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act because the December 8,
2004 grounding resulted in the deaths of thousands of migratory birds. Following
IMC’s plea, it was sentenced to pay criminal penalties of $10,000,000. The criminal
penalty includes $4,000,000 to be paid for community service. $3,000,000 will go to
risk assessment and related projects to reduce shipping hazards in that part of the
Bering Sea where the Selendang Ayu ran aground near Unalaska Island.
$1,000,000 will go to the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, Aleutian Chain
Unit. IMC was also sentenced to 3 years probation, which includes a special
condition that its maintenance program be audited. The grounding of the M/V
Selendang Ayu released roughly 340,000 gallons of bunker fuel and several
thousand tons of soy beans into the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. The
U.S. Coast Guard rescued the crew of the Selendang Ayu, but when a 30 foot wave
struck the helicopter, six crewmen from of the Selendang Ayu were tragically killed.
