SS Normandie the famous French Liner and was in the process of conversion to
her troop-carrying role as the
USS Lafeyette. On February 9, 1942, a fire broke out
from an oxy-acetylene torch and ignited kapok filled life preservers. In fighting the
fire, thousands of tons of water were pumped into the stricken ship, mortally
compromising her transverse stability.
A once-proud ship sits the war out like
this only to be sold for scrap following
the war... an ignoble fate for a
magnificent ship.
