The Insurance Claim Rep May Come From A Variety of Backgrounds

Some sort of college education is generally listed under job requirements with the
larger companies like The Hartford, Travelers & St. Paul, AIG (American International
Group), Tokio Marine, and One Beacon. One shouldn’t overlook the fact that many
insurance firms typically thought of as auto and home and personal lines have
gotten into coverage and claims services for recreational boating and personal
watercraft (PWC) matters. Companies like GEICO, State Farm, Allstate, Progressive
handle underwriting, liability coverage and medical expense coverage for pleasure
boats. Again, whether a college education is sought for entry-level or senior level
insurance jobs may vary from company to company.

Marine claim reps may handle ocean claims, inland claims, cargo claims, hull
claims, machinery claims or combinations thereof. Naturally, the higher the stakes,
the stronger a marine background that a company will seek for their insurance
professionals. If you're handling cargo claims for damaged rolls of paper aboard a
containership, you don’t need to be a former chief mate to understand that salt water
leaking into a 40 foot container will cause damage. You’ll need to know something
about bills of lading, COGSA and non-complex marine surveys. However, if the
insurance claim is for a ship collision on the Mississippi, the stakes are different.
The rep handling this file will need to know inland rules, bridge management
protocols, and how to assess the conduct of watchstanding personnel.

The Columbo Express is one of the world's largest ships and is symbolic
of the super-sized containership serving the freight industry today.
Marine insurance claim representatives review damage or injury claims to
determine if the insured should be paid on them. They can find work with some of
the larger or specialized property and casualty firms that handle marine claims and
underwriting. The qualifications for insurance professionals sought by these
insurance companies can vary. Some will have underwriting backgrounds. Some
will have technical backgrounds. The education requirements can vary from
underwriter to underwriter. Some companies require bachelors degrees, but again
there are no hard-fast rules. If someone has a high school diploma and they’ve
been processing property and casualty claims for 20 years, whether in basic
liability, bodily injury, property damage, no-fault or whatever area, companies will
recognize such valuable insurance industry experience.
