Positions in the Academic Sector
With many traditional professions and jobs being decimated by the worsening economy,
teaching remains a strong staple in the job market. As a whole, the institution of teaching
remains an attractive draw for qualified academic professionals.

While the maritime industry may not be ablaze with academic institutions clamoring for
qualified teachers, there are opportunities in this specialized sector of the teaching
industry. The competition can be stiff though, since the industry as a whole has many
more qualified officers than ships that are suited to employ them. This means many
people who have retired or who are looking to retire from going to sea are drawn to this
small pool of openings.
The world of academia has changed a lot in recent decades. The internet
has introduced on-line and distance courses. Colleges and universities
are offering more course resources while carrying smaller staffs.
Another recent for this is that so many two year and four year colleges
have changed their teaching faculties to include more adjunct professors,
adjunct lecturers and adjunct instructors. The result of that is that the
teaching institutions are able to offer college credits at lower costs to
students.

In our travels, we came across a number of attractive positions for maritime professionals looking
to use their skills to educate others. In tugboatjobs.net, to which we link from our
tugboat jobs
page, (look for the link to the right of the McAllister tugboat photo on that page) we've spotted
teaching opportunities at Scripps Institutes (the ones with the FLIP vessel), Moss Landing, and L.E.
Fletcher Community College. We're hopeful of bringing your attention to additional leads in the near
future. We see that they feature these on their Who's Hiring Now pages.
The U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island

Just as the employment market is stiff in most areas, the world of maritime academia has
also evolved to survive as well. Many of Jones Act powerhouses of the past have gone
under or merged with other carriers. Globalization has changed the manning of vessels
entering the U.S. This has caused the academies to adapt their curriculums to create
programs that include courses in supply chain management, global business,
international trade, logistics, maritime security, law and other material related to the
business end of things.
